n8n AI Automation for Beginners — How It Works and 5 Workflows to Build First

Short answer: n8n is a workflow tool that connects your apps and lets AI make decisions inside the flow. You can use n8n Cloud (Starter about €20 a month as of October 2026) or self-host the free Community Edition. A good first AI workflow is trigger → filter → AI step that returns JSON → route → draft for your approval → log — with an error workflow that alerts you if anything fails.

How n8n works in one paragraph

A workflow starts with a trigger (a new email, a form submission, a schedule, a webhook). Each node after it does one job and passes items to the next. You reference earlier data with expressions like {{ $json.subject }}. AI nodes — the AI Agent, or simpler LLM nodes such as text classifiers and information extractors — read the data and return a decision or a draft.

Cloud or self-hosted?

The pattern that keeps AI workflows reliable

  1. Filter early so junk never reaches the AI.
  2. Ask the AI for JSON only, with fixed keys and allowed values, and turn on structured output.
  3. Validate the fields before you act on them.
  4. Draft, then approve anything a customer will see.
  5. Log every run to a sheet, and add an Error Trigger workflow that alerts you.

5 workflows to build first

  1. Inbox triage and draft replies — label every email and draft replies for the ones that need one. Nothing is sent.
  2. Lead capture to personalised follow-up — a form submission becomes a CRM row and a tailored first reply for approval.
  3. Review monitor — new reviews are scored for sentiment, negatives alert you, and a reply is drafted.
  4. Weekly KPI report — the numbers are calculated in the workflow, and the AI only explains them.
  5. Telegram assistant — message a bot to add tasks, check your calendar or draft a note.

What it costs to run

Most AI steps cost cents per run on small, fast models, and Google AI Studio offers a free tier on some models. Put cheap models on sorting and classification, stronger ones on writing, and set a monthly spending limit on every AI provider.

Twenty workflows, every step written out

The AI Automation Blueprints pack has all five of these and fifteen more — invoices, appointment reminders, content repurposing, a competitor monitor and a full AI agent — each with the accounts you need, every node in order, the exact AI prompt and a test plan, for n8n, Make and Zapier. Frequently asked questions

Is n8n free?

The Community Edition is free to self-host, on your own computer for testing or on a small server for always-on workflows. n8n Cloud is a paid hosted service with a trial, if you do not want to manage a server.

Should I use n8n, Make or Zapier?

Make or Zapier are easiest for simple visual flows on free plans. n8n suits AI agents, many steps and high volume at low cost. Many people start in Make or Zapier and move heavier workflows to n8n.

What is the n8n AI Agent node?

A node that combines a chat model, memory and tools so the workflow can decide which tool to use, for example searching a sheet or drafting an email. Give it few tools, drafts rather than sends, and no delete permissions.

How do I connect an AI model to n8n?

Create an API key with a provider such as Google AI Studio, OpenAI or Anthropic, add it in n8n under Credentials, and select that credential in the AI node. Never paste a key into a prompt or a text field, and set a spending limit.

Do I need to know how to code?

No for most workflows. Expressions such as {{ $json.field }} are the only syntax you meet early on, and the Code node is optional.
